Heroes released by David Bowie in 1977 is beautiful, personal, and wistful for a bigger, more liberated, more meaningful future self, or perhaps future for mankind. In this post we uncover Bowie’s likely inspiration: the book Grave for a Dolphin by Alberto Denti di Pirajno, published in 1956.

Published in 1956, Grave for a Dolphin is described as a memoir, but a fantastical one. One reader recounts:

“It’s a magical account by Italian doctor and administrator who served in Eritrea, northern Africa. It takes you back to a different world; the wildlife, the scenery, the superstitious locals. Folktales heard from a storyteller interweave with strange things seen by the author and his friends - the water gypsy girl who rode a dolphin; the Catholic priest who, like Francis of Assisi could communicate with animals; the bird who accompanied a condemned prisoner to his death.”

At the time Bowie wrote Heroes and was believed to be reading this book, he was living in Western Germany and would have keenly felt the grand society-wide arcs of connections and divisions of man.
